Michigan B&Bs Offer September “Specials” for Grown-Up Fun!

September 7th, 2012 by linda

In the wise words of the innkeepers at Kalamazoo House, “Kids are back in school — it’s time for grownups to have fun.” How true. That’s why Kalamazoo House is joining more than a dozen other fine Michigan bed and breakfasts to offer special deals available this month only. Subscribers to Pure Michigan’s monthly e-blast read about them first but, hey, we’re not keeping them a secret.

End-of-summer specials can be found at bed and breakfasts in every region of Lower Michigan. Some offer discounts, others entice you with room upgrades or extras. Most require minimum stays. Several are Sunday-through-Thursday deals. Click the links, read the offers, and book your September escape now.

How about a romantic wayside picnic? After your four-course breakfast at Teaspoon Bed and Breakfast, Mio, pick up a picnic basket filled with goodies and set out to explore nearby Amish country or to canoe a stretch of the AuSable River. At Willow Pond, a country B&B overlooking a pond near Fenwick in Southwest Michigan, you’re also in Amish country. The innkeepers pack a picnic basket that includes bottled fruits of the vine, a cheese selection from Farm Country Cheese House, homemade French bread and more.

Is a restaurant meal more your style? Book a three-night weekday stay at Victoria Resort Bed and Breakfast, South Haven, and get $25 toward lunch at your choice of three local eateries. Or, on the Lake Huron shore, book one of only three available two-night stays at Adventure Inn Bed and Breakfast, and get $50 toward dinner at one of two water-view restaurants in nearby Port Huron.

What else is cooking? Ask Chef LaPerriere when you and your girlfriends schedule a hands-on culinary weekend at Sherwood Forest B&B, Douglas. How about getting out on the water? Choose a three-night stay at House on the Hill Bed & Breakfast, Charlevoix, and get two boarding passes for a Lake Michigan or Lake Charlevoix cruise aboard the Keweenaw Star. Get a two-hour motor yacht cruise for up to six persons on equally lovely White Lake when you book a September stay at White Swan Inn, Whitehall.

How about some sightseeing in one of the most happening and walkable downtowns in Michigan? Book three nights in any fireplace room at Kalamazoo House and get free admissions to three major attractions plus valuable coupons.

How about a good old-fashioned discount? At Serendipity Bed and Breakfast & Suites, Saugatuck, save 10 percent on a two-night stay. At either Castle in the Country Bed and Breakfast Inn, Allegan, near Saugatuck, or State Street Inn, Harbor Beach, get a third weeknight free when you stay two. At Dewey Lake Manor B&B, enjoy a pedal boat or canoe, perhaps a bonfire while savoring your discount of half off the second of a two-night midweek stay.

So, what about some grownup fun without leaving the bed and breakfast? At Historic Webster House, Bay City, you can get a night’s free use of the inn’s deluxe spa room (jacuzzi, sauna, rain shower) when you book a two-night, Sunday-through-Thursday stay. Or rekindle romance when you book a one-, two- or three-night stay at award-winning Prairieside Suites, Grandville, a Grand Rapids suburb. Deals vary; up to $125 off.

Each of these unique Michigan bed and breakfast inns offering grown-up escapes this September are members of the Michigan Lake to Lake B&B Association. To join and to retain membership status, each must pass inspections by trained professionals who review each inn for well over 100 standards of quality and safety. A great getaway is virtually guaranteed when you rest your head in a Lake to Lake member’s bed.

“Dog Days of August” Specials Make Michigan B&Bs Even More Affordable

August 23rd, 2011 by linda

Ahhh. These hot, sultry late August days are the Dog Days of Summer. Michigan Lake to Lake-member bed and breakfast inns are doing their part to turn up the heat with unbeatable mid-week money-saving offers.

Take 25 percent off a Monday – Thursday stay at Country Hermitage B&B, a 400-acre cherry plantation in Williamsburg, within gazing distance of the East Arm of Grand Traverse Bay and  just minutes from downtown Traverse City. Enjoy three outdoor decks, lawn games, a fire pit, a fishpond, WiFi, XM radio and HDTV. Gourmet breakfast is served every morning and baked treats are served every afternoon.  The offer is good from now through the end of September.

Sirius: the dog star, is the brightest in the night sky. It's the key to understanding what's meant by "Dog Days of Summer."

On the other side of the state, on private Lake Huron beachfront, Adventure Inn is helping retired teachers celebrate their emancipation from schoolbooks and grading papers. As a thanks for their service, the inn is offering retired K through college-level teachers two nights in one of their two lakefront rooms, with 33 percent off the second night, any Sunday through Thursday until the end of August.

So what are “dog days?”  Back in the days of the ancients, the skies were clear of today’s pollution. The Romans identified constellations of stars by their shapes and gave them the names of animals like bears, bulls and dogs.

The brightest of the stars in the “big dog” constellation, Canis Major, is Sirius, which also happens to be the brightest star in the night sky. In fact, it’s so bright, the ancient Romans thought the earth received heat from it.  It was considered a second sun.

While you can easily see Sirius in January from the northern latitudes, in late summer, the constellation rises and sets with the sun. The ancients believed the heat of Sirius added to the heat of the sun, creating a stretch of hot and sultry weather.

There you have it: the dog days of summer, named after the dog star Sirius, is as good a reason as any for B&Bs to celebrate with special offerings. Check the “Specials and Packages” page on the Lake to Lake website often for new Dog Days of August and other categories of cost-saving specials.
