Every Michigan B&B is Its Own Unique Self

October 2nd, 2014 by linda

All B&Bs are NOT created equal, thank goodness. As an example, these three bed and breakfast inns could not be more distinct from each other in architecture, geography and decor. What they do have in common is uncommon hospitality, attention to safety, exceptional comfort, a guarantee of cleanliness and some of the best breakfasts you’ll ever have. Meet Gould Farm Bed and Breakfast Inn, a working farm near Clare in the heart of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula; Hexagon House, a luxurious six-sided showplace in the Lake Michigan harbor village of Pentwater; and Butler B&B, the epitome of Victoriana in the charming Lake Huron community of Lexington.

Gould Farm Bed & Breakfast Inn, Clare, Northwest Central Region

Gould Farm exterior

Lush, plush and thoroughly welcoming, clean cut and contemporary: Gould Farm Bed & Breakfast Inn will banish any stereotype of rural life. Established in 1975, this 835-acre farm has 550 head of cattle on pasture. The traditional-style farm house was completed in 2001 and has four lovely guest rooms with private baths and a guest lounge. Located near Clare, Gould Farm is “up north” but not too far north of Michigan’s major population centers, making it an easy drive from practically anywhere for a relaxing retreat. The house is set atop a hill with sweeping views of the farm in all four directions. In warm weather, relax on the white wicker front porch while cattle graze in the distance. Wake up each morning to a hearty farm-style breakfast. Get away from it all!

Hexagon House Bed & Breakfast, Pentwater, Northwest Region

In the cool of summer mornings, breakfast is served hot and fresh on one of the porches and decks that wrap around both levels on all six sides of the Hexagon House B&B in the Lake Michigan harbor Village of Pentwater. Set on three private acres of sweeping lawn and gardens, Hexagon House features all the high-tech amenities like wireless internet. But one low-tech amenity sure to please is an outdoor fire pit, surrounded by comfortable Adirondack chairs and designed exclusively for doing absolutely nothing. Just minutes from sugar-sand beaches and Pentwater’s quaint downtown specialty shops, galleries, pubs, restaurants and marina, this B&B is open in all four seasons.

Butler B&B, Lexington, Southeast Region

New restaurants and a downtown renovation are revitalizing the Village of Lexington, Lake Huron’s number-one beach town. At the heart of it, Butler B&B is a quiet refuge for those seeking to get away from any city’s’ hustle and bustle. A short walk from downtown shops and restaurants and just four blocks from the scenic limestone harbor and marina, this fully-renovated and restored Victorian home, circa 1879, offers three large and lovely guestrooms, each with its own private bath. A hot and homemade breakfast is served every morning. Two landscaped acres of lawn and garden offer guests peace as well as privacy.

Proving Myths Wrong: Every Michigan B&B is Unique – Part 9

April 23rd, 2014 by linda

Welcome to our ninth in a series introducing you to Michigan’s finest bed and breakfast inns. You’ll discover that each is unique and dispels the long-held myths of dusty doilies, baths shared with strangers and supervised curfews. Proving the old myths oh-so-wrong are Saravilla B&B in Alma; Historic Webster House B&B in Bay City; and Candlewyck House B&B in Pentwater.

Saravilla B&B, Alma (SE)
Saravilla B&B Billiard Room
A billiard room? It’s not what you’d expect in a bed and breakfast, is it? Another unexpected surprise: those French doors you at the back open onto a sunroom that houses a year-around multi-person hot tub. Saravilla B&B in Alma is full of surprises. The pool table presides over the entrance to a 1,200 square foot ballroom, perfect for weddings, meetings, scrapbooking, reunions, quilting and whatever else you can think of. It’s just another room in this three-story, 11,000 square foot Dutch Colonial home, located close to Alma College. Believe it or not, when a local lumber baron built it 1894, it was as a “cottage” for his daughter’s wedding present. Her name was Sara – hence, Saravilla. Today, it holds “Certificates of Excellence” awarded by Trip Advisor in 2011 and again in 2013 for consistently outstanding guest reviews. Innkeepers Linda and Jon invite you to enjoy its seven spacious guestrooms with private baths, its inviting front porch, a back garden deck and beautifully landscaped grounds.

Historic Webster House, Bay City (NE)
Historic Webster House B&B grand staircase
Imagine yourself somewhere back in time — a time when you didn’t take the elevator down to the grab a bagel from the breakfast bar at the chain motel. Instead you swept down a grand staircase to the elegant breakfast room for baked goods fresh from the oven and a sweet or savory gourmet entrée served fireside, hot from the kitchen. You still can. Simply get away to the Historic Webster House in Bay City. This painstakingly-restored Victorian home features six guest rooms or suites, each with queen-sized beds complete with European featherbeds, plus all the modern amenities from cable TV to free WiFi and Netflix. You can rent the in-house spa and enjoy the Jacuzzi tub for two, cedar dry sauna and overhead double shower in total privacy. Just blocks from downtown and the Bay, Webster House is strategically located for easy access to outdoor recreation in Michigan’s Thumb and to the commerce and culture of the Tri-Cities area.

Candlewyck House, Pentwater (NW)
Candlewyck B&B baskets The email address is “basket lady” and among the activities offered is “basket weaving.” What kind of B&B is this? For 23 years, Mary Jo and John have shared Candlewyck House B&B in Pentwater with thousands of guests from around the world. Their gardens are heavenly and Mary Jo cooks a five-course breakfast every morning. Besides being an innkeeper and a chef, she is an expert weaver of fine, intricate baskets. If you’re interested in learning how, she’ll teach you.
Candlewyck B&B Pentwater MIYou and your friends can get together like friends do for quilting and scrapbooking – but enjoy a hands-on workshop along with the harbor-town accommodations. Or you can do what most guests do: enjoy the sugar sand beach on Lake Michigan, just down the street. John and Mary Jo will lend you bicycles to traverse the six blocks to swim and sun, shop the boutique stores and galleries and experience the restaurants and pubs. Lodging accommodations include six guest rooms with private baths. Families are welcome.
