| In 1846, Dr. Van Raalte, a minister, traveled with a group of people from Europe to America with a plan for building a settlement. In February of 1847, they arrived at the mouth of the Black River. This small group soon grew to over 700 people, as more of Dr. Van Raalte’s fellow Hollanders came to make their home here in Ottawa County, Michigan. You’ll learn more about the history of Holland when you visit the Cappon House Museum and Settler’s House, or the Holland Museum. After a refreshing night’s sleep at one of our local bed and breakfasts, you will find endless family activities at the DeGraff Nature Center, Holland Water Sports, Outdoor Discovery Center, the Holland Community Aquatic Center, Teusink’s Pony Farm, or at Craig’s Cruisers Family Fun Center. You won’t be sorry you made this your vacation destination, as you walk through Downtown Holland, and visit the beaches, the city parks, and Windmill Island. There’s more. Check out our Fall Color tours, shops, art galleries, and theaters, for a quiet, relaxing day. So many things to do, and we’ve not even begun to talk about the great fishing and winter sports available to residents and travelers alike. |
