| In the center of Calhoun County, Michigan, travelers will find the county seat of Marshall. One of the most notable citizens of Marshall was Isaac Crary, who helped author the Michigan Constitution, as well as formed the Michigan public school system. One can immediately see that Marshall is proud of its history, just by looking at the many Victorian buildings which have lovingly been restored downtown. Also carefully preserved is the Governor’s Mansion. The townspeople labored under the hope that Marshall would become the capital of the state of Michigan, so in 1839, the Governor’s Mansion was constructed. The Capitol Hill School served the town well, housing the education of its children for 101 years. It was built in 1860, and is now a museum. Also built in 1860 was the Honolulu House Museum. Abner Pratt, the first U.S. Consul to the Hawaiian Islands, had it constructed. So many wonderful buildings—some of them are lovely Bed and Breakfast Inns, covers turned down, just waiting for you to arrive! While vacationing here in Marshall, be sure to take the kids to the Museum of Magic. You’ll also want to check out the Brooks Memorial Fountain which held Marshall’s first ball on New Year’s Eve, 1836. Before leaving town, don’t miss the Blue Hour Gallery or Harley’s Antique Mall, and Alwyn Downs Golf Club is beckoning you—hope you’ve got your clubs in the trunk! |
