St Joseph
Parades and trolley rides on brick streets. It doesn’t get more quaint than that. Well, maybe it does, when the Horses on the Beach appear about town. From 1910 through 1971, the Silver Beach Amusement Park was home to a lovely carousel, which is memorialized by the 53 horses displayed throughout St. Joseph. The St. Joseph Welcome Center at Ship and State Streets is a great place to begin your visit to this lovely Michigan town. You’ll find information about accommodations at our bed and breakfasts, as well as the great things to see and do. The town has come a long way since this spot where the St. Joseph River meets Lake Michigan was first discovered in 1669! “The Riviera of the Midwest” is what folks are calling St. Joseph today, as the town becomes a popular vacationing area, even though trade is still evident in the many shipments of hardware, furniture, lumber, tools, furs, grain, wool, and maple sugar still sailing out of here each day. The Silver Beach Amusement Park, the gathering spot for many years, may no longer be operational, but there’s still much activity to be found out near the St. Joseph Lighthouse. Not only can visitors tour the lighthouse, but there’s waterskiing, fishing, and boating, just beckoning the vacationer looking to unload his or her stress and distractions. Following these adventures are a lovely dinner in town, and then a concert at the Shadowland Pavilion, built to memorialize the old Shadowland Ballroom. Your visit is still not complete. Take the family on out to the Tiny Tot’s Park, the John and Dede Howard Ice Arena and Skate Park, and the beautiful view of Lake Michigan from Lake Bluff Park. St. Joseph, Michigan, has so much to offer.
