Port Sanilac

In the early 1800s, the lumbermen who worked making shingles along Lake Huron built a shanty along the shore, to serve as a marker for sailors. This was the beginning of “Bark Shanty Point”, Michigan. The first mill, store, and school began operating around 1850. Later, the name was changed to Port Sanilac, after an Indian chief. Of course 1886 brought the construction of a real lighthouse, burning kerosene rather than electricity until 1924. On the grounds of the Port Sanilac lighthouse, there still stands the oldest structure in the village, the “Bark Shanty”. The lighthouse also served as a rendezvous point for the Bootleggers of the twenties! Only two hours from Detroit, Port Sanilac was the first harbor of refuge to appear on Lake Huron. Even today, divers, fishermen, and recreational boaters and sailors can find necessary services as well as comfort facilities here. Whether you’re in need of gasoline, diesel, ice, electric or fresh water hookups and pump outs, towing and repair, or even just a shower and a fishing license, this is the place to be. There’s a courtesy van to area shops and restaurants, and the kids can run and climb through the playground. Sailing and scuba lessons are also available. The Barn Theatre, Harbor Park, the Sanilac County Historical Museum and Village—all are excellent sites to visit while vacationing here in Michigan. Shopping, dining, and golfing are also popular pastimes. This has been quite a long day…time to check in to one of Port Sanilac’s Bed and Breakfast Inns, for a night of rest and pampering while planning tomorrow’s itinerary.
