| Antrim County, Michigan, is home to so many attractive towns, and Elk Rapids, once known as Stevens, MI, is among the most lovely and is also the first town located in the county. It’s said that the new name came from a pair of elk horns which were discovered in the rapids of the Meguzee River. Prior to the white settlers coming, the area was home to the Anishinabek Native Americans. The original sawmill in Elk Rapids would supply much of the pine and hardwood used in Detroit, Milwaukee, and Chicago for the incredible homes of the wealthy folks there. So much more can be discovered at the Elk Rapids Historical Museum. One way that Elk Rapids displays its charm is through its annual Harbor Days festival. One of the best slip harbors in Michigan is located here, boasting 212 slips. Fishing from your boat is fun and easy at the public boat launches along the Grand Traverse Bay and the Elk, Bass, and Birch lakes. That sure is a lot of action for a village that fits into one square mile! But there’s more…check out the golfing at Spruce Run or High Point, as well as the gaming at Turtle Creek Casino before heading home. Then be sure to tell all of your friends about Elk Rapids, Michigan. |
