Indian River
The year was 1873. The Civil War was over, and the first white settler had just arrived in this area of Cheboygan County, Michigan, now known as Indian River. Logging, sawmills, farms, orchards—all contributed to the growth and survival of these homesteaders along the water. It only took a couple of decades before Indian River became a destination for steamboats carrying logs, mail, merchandise, and vacationers. This cool, quiet forest had become the place to be in the summer. Most of the businesses in the town area were destroyed by fire in 1911, but the resort area at Indian River is still thriving today. One of the greatest landmarks to visit here is The Cross In The Woods. A bronze cross of Christ, 31 feet high and weighing seven tons, was added to the original 55-ft. crucifix made from a giant redwood tree. Outdoor mass is held here regularly, although members of all faiths are welcome to come and enjoy this incredible sculpture. Summer eventually turns to winter, and here in Indian River there is still much to do. Ice fishing, snow shoeing, downhill and cross-country skiing are all enjoyed in abundance. Don’t forget to bring the kids and stop by Romanik’s Ranch. They’ll love petting the farm animals and checking out the elk and buffalo herds. Come in the fall, and you’ll get the chance to try and find your way out of the corn maze—better bring your compass!
