Oscoda
Henry Schoolcraft originally named this little corner of the earth “Au Sable”, from the Indian words “ossim” and “muscoda”, which means “pebbly prairie”. Today the town of Oscoda sits at the mouth of the Au Sable River, where it empties into Lake Huron. Oscada, located in Iosco County, Michigan, was first settled by Edward Smith, and soon became an important part of the lumber industry on the Great Lakes. Formerly home to Wurtsmith Air Force Base, Oscoda’s main industry today is its tourism. A visit to the aviation museum is only one of the many stops on the itinerary of our guests to the area. Summer and Winter alike are action-packed seasons here in Oscoda, boasting sites and sports for either season. Resorts, restaurants, motels, all await the traveler looking for fun and relaxation. Several of the local sites are in honor of the lumbering industry which thrived in Iosco County for so many years. One more location of interest are the Iargo Springs nearby. Prior to the 1840s, the Indians believed there were mystical powers to be found in the waters of the springs. The Civilian Conservation Corps have successfully preserved this lovely site. Why not come and see?
