Fremont is a small town in south Northwest Michigan, about an hour north of Grand Rapids. It has several excellent parks, and is a wonderful place for outdoor recreation. Though it began as a lumber town in 1855, Fremont is perhaps best known as the home of Gerber Baby Foods. The Gerber family has lived in Fremont since the mid 1870s; first they had a tannery, and then they created the Fremont Canning Company. It was not until 1928, however, that the Gerber family began to manufacture baby foods. Today, Fremont remains the company's hub. Each July, the National Babyfood Festival is a reminder of the Gerber legacy; look forward to live music, sidewalk sales, and the always popular baby food cook-offs.
