Adventure Inn

(Captions for the photos are below.)

Once when I opened the door for arriving guests, a  gentleman was standing there just beaming, pleased that he had pulled off an anniversary surprise. But his wife was still in the passenger seat. I could see she was weeping.

Uh-oh.

But maybe I should start by telling you what it's like to arrive at Adventure Inn, where luxury meets laid-back on a quiet Lake Huron beach...

You've traveled toward Port Huron on I-94 from Detroit or across I-69 from Flint or Chicago, or you've driven across the Blue Water Bridge from Canada. And then the freeways end, and you're driving north toward Lexington on M-25, which is four lanes past the Barnes & Noble, the Gander Mountain and the mall, and then becomes two lanes.

You know there's a Great Lake somewhere close, but can you see it? Sorry, no. The lakefront residences have long drives, tall trees, and hedges or fences at the road.

Finally, you come to Lakeport, which has no sign, but this must be it because there's Lakeport Market and a bank, two restaurants, dueling pizza and ice cream joints (we're loyal to Pizzas and Cream), a barber shop and a blinking yellow caution light.

I must disclose that in all these nine miles since the end of the freeways, you have not passed much of any unique interest, unless you happened to spot the TJ Maxx, which is an excellent one.

Continue north for a mile, passing Lakeport State Park on a tree-lined stretch where you can accelerate to 55 mph but need to watch for deer. And then, at a Mobil station, turn right onto Lakeshore Road.

After Lakeshore curves to the north, look for Shorewood Drive, a righthand turn onto a one-lane drive. Come all the way to the end, to the two-story red house whose added-onto look we worked hard to achieve, and park on the concrete-pavered driveway.

Now you can finally see Lake Huron in one of its many moods -- stiff whitecaps, pounding sand-colored waves, foggy, filled with floating ice, or as bright and greenish-blue as the Caribbean.

Taking in the beauty of the lake, along with our rose garden, was what moved our guest to tears that day.

So she said. Maybe it had just been too long between anniversary surprises.

Adventure Inn has only two guest rooms, each with terrific views of the lake:

THE AFT CABIN is a nautical-themed, media-free retreat (except for having WiFi, whose reach extends to the water's edge). It has a queen bed, attached bath with stall shower and a private balcony with two chairs and a small table. On a yacht, the "aft cabin" is often the owner's quarters, and this is our home's original master bedroom. $140 per night.

THE TOY BOX is spacious and playful, yet cozy and elegant at the same time. Its queen bed is angled to maximize the view out of 10 feet of windows in an alcove that also has a comfortable sofa. The room decor includes three working slot machines from the Al Capone era in Chicago and toy train-related art from my husband's days with Lionel Trains Inc. Other features of the room: attached bathroom with a custom stall shower; 37-inch plasma TV with premium cable, and your own central heat and air controls. $165 per night.

Fresh flowers in your room, delectable num-nums, locally hand-made soap, Aveda shampoo and luxury-grade linens and towels are all part of the amenities you can expect at Adventure Inn

BREAKFAST consists of a fresh and artful fruit course, followed by a hot entree. Baked goods are home-made from scratch. We feature locally grown and Michigan foods to the extent possible.

When you book your stay, we inquire about allergies and preferences. We coordinate your preferences with those of the other couple. And then we surprise and, we hope, delight you. Breakfast is served at a mutually convenient time between 8 and 9:45 a.m. In-room dining is possible. So are early-early and to-go continental breakfasts. Coffee and tea are available as soon as you arise.

CHECK IN as early as 1 p.m. On the day of departure, checkout time is 11-ish, but we invite you to linger as long as you wish to enjoy Lake Huron and our beach and deck.

WITH OUR SANDY COTTAGE vacation rental next door (see our website for details), we can accommodate girlfriends getaways and family groups of up to 12 people, depending on the sleeping arrangements.

ABOUT THE PHOTOS:
1) Fruit course always features the season's freshest.
2) Adventure Inn exterior, from the lake. Toy Box windows are on the second floor, far left. Aft Cabin is unseen on the north side.
3) Autumn view from the sunporch breakfast table.
4) The Aft Cabin is a nautical-themed retreat with private balcony.
5) The sky-lighted Toy Box is much larger than this shows. Playful and romantic. Ten feet of windows overlook the lake.
6) Aerial view of our slice of Lake Huron shoreline.
7) A sailboat at sunset off our beach.
8) September dawn at Adventure Inn. (Included for the 98% of guests who, despite usual habits and good intentions, never manage to wake up for the sunrise.)
