A Message From Beverly Bender.....

When you come to a friendly, small town like Frankmuth -- I mean, under 5,000 residents -- why not stay at a friendly, small place like ours? We have what I call a "homestay" bed and breakfast. Here, you'll experience one of Michigan's iconic travel destinations from the point of view of two people who call Frankenmuth home.

Guests have used adjectives like "spotless," "welcoming" and "homey" to describe Frankenmuth Bed and Breakfast, which also is known as Bender Haus. We raised three children here and opened our home as a bed and breakfast in 1980. After all these years, we still love doing this.

FOUR BEDROOMS can accommodate up to 10 guests in our one-and-a-half-story ranch-style home. All four rooms have queen beds, and one of those rooms also contains twin beds. We have two first-floor bedrooms, so we can accommodate guests who wish to avoid stairs. If that's your preference, please state it when booking.

You may have noticed that we have just two guest bathrooms, one on each floor. Here's how we handle it: Friends or family who are traveling in a group of, say, four or up to six will share a bath, and we do provide robes. But if a couple books first, we simply do not book the other room nearest to that bathroom. This assures guests that they will not be sharing a bathroom with strangers.

The configuration of bedrooms and bathrooms is ideal for couples traveling together, for a girlfriends getaway or for a family. We invite you to enjoy the living room or play games at the dining table.

During some spring and summer weeks, we offer discounts on the third or fourth night of a stay if those days fall Sunday through Thursday nights. Please inquire.

BREAKFAST is served family-style at 8:30 a.m., although early risers will find coffee and tea ready and waiting. Breakfast fare includes a choice of juices, fresh fruit, plus a hot entree such as a savory egg dish and muffins or other treats from the oven. One of our signature dishes is Bender Haus Peach French Toast, the baking of which fills the house with the aroma of cinnamon, vanilla and brown sugar. And yes, I do share recipes.

FRANKENMUTH celebrates its national heritage in a way that few other towns are able to do, probably because it's so rare to have a U.S. town in which most people so strongly identify with one nationality and are so knowledgable about their history.

My husband Elden's great-grandfather was one of the 15 original German settlers of the town. They arrived in 1845 as missionaries from an area called Franconia, which today is considered part of Bavaria. Frankenmuth means "courage of the Franconians." Descendants of the original settlers and others from Germany who followed make up more than half the residents of Frankenmuth and the area.

Guests frequently ask Elden to tell what he knows about those early settlers, or about his life on the 150-acre family farm or about his later work as a watchmaker and jewelry shop owner right here on Main Street. When asked, he'll give guests a brief, informative tour of the town, which helps them decide how best to spend their time in Frankenmuth.

The Bavarian Inn and Zehnder's restaurants both are justifiably famous for their family-style chicken dinners. Afterward, walk it off by strolling along Main Street, lined with a three-season flower display and dozens of enticing little shops. Ride in style on a horse-drawn carriage. Or take an hour-long trip on the Bavarian Belle, a 150-passenger paddlewheel riverboat.

Many attractions are within walking distance of Frankenmuth Bed and Breakfast. To visit Bronner's vast Christmas store, most people will decide to drive. If you buy too much, Elden is good at figuring out how to repack your car.

The many outlet stores of Birch Run are only seven miles away. You'll find antique shopping there, too. We also have three nearby golf courses: The Fortress, right in Frankenmuth; the Timbers in Vassar, five miles away; and Green Acres, near Bridgeport.

As they say on frankenmuth.org, the Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau website, "One Town... A Million Ways To enjoy It."

Hope you'll agree that staying at Bender Haus is one more way to enjoy Frankenmuth.

P.S. One time a guest, traveling in a party of six from Illinois, got out of the car in our driveway and told his friends, "I can't stay here. This is someone's private home." His friends persuaded him to try it. He loved it. He and his friends ended up inviting us to spend the night at one of their homes on our way out west. These kinds of connections are made at B&Bs all the time.
