Beer and Wine Trail

The history of wine and beer in Michigan is long and rich.
Back in 1679, French explorers crafted wines from wild grapes growing along the Riviére du Détroit. By the end of the century, the first Michigan vineyard was planted in nearby Fort Ponchartrain. The first Michigan wines produced for commercial sale were made in the mid- to late-1800s in Southeast Michigan. By 1900, Michigan was one of the top wine producing states in the country.
It is no surprise, then, that today the Michigan wine industry is thriving. More than 70 wineries cultivate more than 10,000 acres of land. The wines crafted in Michigan are created from grapes grown in Michigan, grapes that thrive in the soils and climate of the Upper and Lower Peninsulas.
Michigan wines are constantly evolving. When American tastes preferred sweet wines, Michigan wines tended to be sweet. When American palates began to favor dry wines after World War II, Michigan vintners started cultivating European vinifera.
Traveling Michigan wine trails is a great way to explore the state. Each part of Michigan has a wine trail that connects the various wineries in the region. Whether there are three wineries in a region or thirty, the wine trails lead to them all. So, find the wine trail closest to your Michigan bed and breakfast, and start tasting Michigan wines today.
If you prefer beer to wine, you are in good company in Michigan. There is evidence that folks have been brewing beer commercially in Michigan since the 1820s. Certainly breweries were open for business by the late 1830s. Since the mid-1990s, microbreweries in Michigan have been experiencing a resurgence; they brew everything from stouts and ales to lagers, so no matter the weather, there is always a beer that tastes just right.
Today there are over 50 breweries, microbreweries and brewpubs in Michigan. The microbreweries and brewpubs usually have tasting rooms, and some have full-scale restaurants. Ask your Michigan bed and breakfast innkeepers for directions to the nearest Michigan beer trail, and have fun exploring the state, one beer at a time. Or attend one of several beer festivals throughout the year and around the state, where it is possible to taste beers from many Michigan breweries all in one location.
