Travelers today want to fully experience the places they go. They want to taste locally grown foods and partake of local wines and beers. Travelers to Michigan are in luck, for exceptional food is grown and produced here, and there are many places to enjoy it.
Michigan tart cherries, apples, peaches, melons or blueberries are likely to find their way to a breakfast table at a B&B Michigan.
You may feast on fresh blueberry pancakes or on toast smothered with wild thimbleberry jam. You’ll probably wrap your hands around steaming cups of locally roasted coffee. You may be treated to a cherry tart some afternoon, or find yourself dipping into a bowl of heavenly chocolate covered blueberries. Your Michigan bed and breakfast may serve an afternoon snack featuring artisanal cheeses and breads or smoked Lake Superior whitefish, with which the perfect accompaniment is a Michigan wine, beer or cider.
Many Michigan bed and breakfasts are located near farmer's markets, farm stands or u-pick farms where, during your stay, you can capture some of Michigan's bounty for your table at home. Look for sweet corn, asparagus, cucumbers, celery, squash, carrots and pumpkins in season.
Each market is different, but you may also find expect to find free-range chickens and eggs, raw-milk or farmstead cheeses (made where the milk is produced), grass-fed or pasture-based meat and honey. Besides being assured of getting the freshest possible foods, you'll find it's fun to talk to the people who produced them.
Create a travel itinerary based on Michigan agri-tourism and food festivals. In spring, use a bed and breakfast Michigan as your home base for morel mushroom hunting. In late spring and summer, look for u-pick farms nears near Michigan bed and breakfasts. If you're a gardener, seeing species in bloom at a lily farm or iris farm in early summer is a great way to pick out new additions for your yard. in the fall, look for jams and other preserves, mums that, unlike the store-bought ones, really ARE hardy, and home decor items like grapevine wreaths.
Drink Michigan beer and cider during fall and winter beer festivals, and wine in the fall and spring. (Or enjoy tastings at local brewpubs and wineries all year long). Look for strawberry festivals in late May and June, cherry festivals in July, and blueberry festivals in July and August. You won’t want to miss the National Asparagus Festival in June, or the mushroom festivals that spring up spring through fall. Celebrate the potato and the salmon in September (they do go quite well together), and apples and pumpkins in October.
