Michigan Lighthouses | Try a Nearby Bed and Breakfast Michigan Inn
Home > Find a B&B > Michigan Lighthouses | Try a Nearby Bed and Breakfast Michigan Inn

Lighthouses figure predominantly into the mythos of Michigan, and with good reason. Michigan is surrounded by Great Lakes. It is bordered by Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and even the edge of Lake Erie. Indeed, the Great Lakes touch 3,2000 miles of Michigan coastline. No wonder a trip to Michigan almost always includes a visit to at least one Michigan lighthouse.

The Great Lakes were an important commerce route even before steamboats first traveled them in the early 1820’s; and with the advent of faster, more reliable ships, shipping traffic on the Great Lakes exploded. The lighthouses that dot Michigan’s shores have long been an integral part of the navigational network of the Great Lakes.

Michigan’s first lighthouse was built at Fort Gratiot in 1825 (and rebuilt in 1829 after a storm destroyed it). It is the second oldest lighthouse on the Great Lakes, and is still shining light on the waters of Lake Huron today. The newest Michigan lighthouse was completed in 2002.

There are more than 150 lighthouses on the Michigan coastline, most of which still operate. Over the years, some Michigan lighthouses have been converted into museums, private residences or, in some instances, Michigan bed and breakfasts. No matter their function, Michigan lighthouses capture the imagination of thousands of visitors each year.

Dozens of Michigan lighthouses are open to visitation throughout the year. The Michigan coastline is never far away - find the Michigan lighthouse nearest to your bed and breakfast Michigan, and visit it. Visit them all if you have time - it’s a wonderful way to shape your Michigan travel. Take a scenic drive around the 3,2000 miles of Michigan coastline. Stop at every Michigan lighthouse you see. Stay in Michigan bed and breakfasts along the way. It may take a while, but it will be worth it.
