Beautiful Michigan Vacations

Trails, Fields, Forests & Slopes
Home > Find a B&B > Trails, Fields, Forests & Slopes

Michigan is heaven for outdoor recreation enthusiasts. Each region offers something unique, from the sparsely populated, heavily forested Upper Peninsula to the cities of Detroit and Flint.

Cyclists will find miles and miles of trails. They connect cities to nearby parks and towns, and hug the coastline. They meander through forests. Bring bikes on ferries and explore the islands of Michigan in an environmentally friendly way - Mackinac Island is best explored by bike, as auto traffic is restricted. Make it a goal to cycle from one Michigan bed and breakfast to the next - it’s a great way to work up an appetite for those hearty, delicious breakfasts.

Skiing is another popular sport in Michigan. There are more than 40 downhill ski areas in Michigan, making it the best place for alpine skiing in the Midwest. The highest peak in Michigan may be under 2,000 feet, but there are ski slopes with vertical drops of over 900 feet and ski runs more than 8,000 feet long. Nordic skiers will find more than 3,000 miles of cross country skiing trails in Michigan.

Many stables provide horses for folks who want to explore Michigan on horseback. Head into the brilliantly colored forests in the fall, or ride along a scenic stretch of the coast in the summer. Look for Michigan bed and breakfasts near horseback riding.

If you prefer to walk on your own two legs, hundreds of trails traverse Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas. Hike the Shore to Shore Trail, which leads from Lake Michigan to Lake Huron. Pull on your boots and walk beside marshes and wetlands, binoculars and bird book in hand. Or grab your flip-flops and head to the Michigan sand dunes.

There are four national parks in Michigan, and six state forests. Nature preserves, wildlife refuges, arboretums and public gardens are other places to experience the outdoors. Hide, bike, ride a horse or ski your way from one bed and breakfast Michigan to the next. It would be easy to spend a lifetime experiencing all Michigan has to offer; start with your next vacation.
