Ah the outdoors! The Bay County Riverwalk/Railtrail is a 17.5 mile walking, biking, inline skating and cross-country skiing trail with access very close to the Webster House. The trail's striking scenery changes from woodlands and marshes to riverfront views and ball fields to boardwalk along the waterfront and through Bay City's residential neighborhoods and rural township lands. So enjoy the outdoors during your stay at the Webster House. We'll even supply the bikes!

Located on 65 wooded acres, we offer lots of nature experiences right on site. Whether you want to stroll through the majestic hardwood trees, paddle in our lake on our complimentary kayaks or paddle boat, use our snowshoes or your cross-country skiis in the winter, or just listen to the four species of frogs calling from the pond while you sit in our screened gazebo; the beauty and wonder of nature is just outside your door when you stay at Castle in the Country.

A Walk in the park
The Trails in the Saugatuck Harbor Natural Area are well marked. The paths offer views of the dunes, Oxbow Lagoon, the Kalamazoo River and Lake Michigan. One trail goes to the south pier. Stray off the structure, especially when the ice forms. Some of the trails can be challenging and the now and ice add a new feel to the trek.
In 2010, land conservancy of West Michigan and volunteers cleaned up the land and marked trails.

Launch your canoe or kayak in the crystal clear waters of the White River at Happy Mohawk Canoe Livery nestled in the Historic Manistee National Forest, just a short ride north from the Cocoa Cottage B&B. Warm summer breezes waft you along the scenic White River-a spectacular bird watching sanctuary. You can see everything from stately blue herons to majestic bald eagles and elegant swans. The Newaygo area has plenty to offer the outdoor enthusiast. The Manistee National Forest has plenty of trails for hiking and snow sports. The Muskegon River is awash with Steelhead and Trout and are sure to prove a challenge to any angler.

Antique and thrift shopping, quilting supplies and classes, pottery classes, and great area restaurants will introduce you to some of the town's folk as well as learn about some of the area history

Being in the center of Michigan's famed Chain of Lakes, the village of Bellaire presents the hiker, biker, or skier easy access to some of Michigan's best nature trails and parks. Within several miles of the Grand Victorian are Grass River Natural Area and the Jordan River valley, two of northern Michigan's hidden gems for quiet sports. Nature trials, stream fishing, kayaking, canoeing, birding, horseback riding, skiing, and just plain outdoor enjoyment as nature intended! Golf and downhill skiing is right next door at Shanty Creek Resort. And yes, we provide local maps to help you locate the activity of choice.

Nature Lovers' Delight. In nearby Midland discover Dow Gardens, a 110 acre botanical garden with exciting horticultural displays. Explore its 40 acre Whiting Forest with its emphasis on native plant communities of the Great Lakes Region. View the current Art in the Garden exhibit, experience Butterflies in Bloom (March/April), see summer outdoor movies, tour the Dow historic home. Prefer a more natural setting? Enjoy walking, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing along more than 15 miles of marked foot trails at the Chippewa Nature Center just outside Midland. Over 1000 acres of woodlands, wetlands, rivers and upland hills. Tired? Return to the Webster House for a relaxing evening.

Nature lovers are welcome at Dove Nest B&B to observe our display of doves, pigeons and other wild birds. We are close to Fernwood Botanical Gardens and other Nature Centres. Miles of hiking trails can be enjoyed at Sarett Nature Center or Love Creek County Park. Warren Dunes State Park offers spectacular views of sand dunes and Lake Michigan shoreline.

The Hart-Montague Scenic Bike Trail, over 28 miles of paved, reclaimed railways beckons you, just 1 block from the Cocoa Cottage B&B. Enjoy a relaxing, sightseeing cruise or serious cardiovascular workout-the choice is yours. Discover our beautiful White Lake Community Library, a leisurely one and one-half mile pedal to our south. Or take on a more serious ride of 23 miles to the North and stop midway at the Country Dairy for a tour and great homemade ice cream. Bike rentals at Powers Outdoors. Package includes map, dinner certificate to Harbor View Grill and Ice Cream voucher at County Dairy.

We are located 1/4 mile off of the White Pine Trail (old train tacks). If you are bicycling, cross country skiing or even snowmobiling we are a great place to stop for a night or two! We also have our local Riverwalk that is a very nice paved trail that starts across the road. This trail takes you through Hemlock Park and all along the river. Great for walking and jogging as well as bicycling.
