Waters of Michigan
Home > Find a B&B > Waters of Michigan
It is virtually impossible to think of Michigan without thinking of water. Four Great Lakes border Michigan: Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron and Lake Erie. Michigan boasts 3,200 miles of shoreline: over one hundred sandy beaches, and miles of craggy, rocky shores. The waters are guarded by approximately 150 lighthouses; they’ve guided shipping traffic safely past the coast of Michigan for over a century, and will continue to do so for years to come.
There are hundreds of islands in Michigan. Some, like Isle Royale in Lake Superior, are National Parks. Others, like Mackinac Island, are almost entirely devoted to State Parks. Visit North and South Manitou Islands, and experience Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Or plan a trip to Beaver Island, the most remote inhabited island in the Great Lakes. The 21 Apostle Islands, in Lake Superior, offer a unique blend of natural and cultural resources, while six small islands in Lake Huron are the Michigan Islands National Wildlife Refuge.
Get out on the water to visit these islands. Kayak or canoe around their shores, experiencing the beauty of Michigan waters on an intimate scale. Charter a fishing expedition and fulfill a lifelong dream of catching the big one. Sail through the Inland Waterway, across three lakes and down three rivers. Spend an afternoon traveling through one of the many locks that connect the waters of Michigan. Or sit back and enjoy a cruise of the Great Lakes: sunset cruises, dinner cruises, or sightseeing tours reveal the history of the region, and are interesting and fun.
In Michigan, you are never more than six miles from a body of water. There is always something interesting to do on or in the water. Ice-fishing or ice skating in winter, swimming, diving, or boating in the summer. Michigan bed and breakfasts are near it all. You could be, too.
