North Lakeport, Michigan, bed and breakfast

North Lakeport sits on Lake Huron, in Southeast Michigan, halfway between Port Huron and Lexington. It's an unincorporated area north of Lakeport State Park off M-25, the scenic two-lane road that follows the shoreline of the area of Michigan known as the Thumb. Run away to a North Lakeport Michigan bed and breakfast when you feel the urge to get away from it all and yet be within an hour of Metro Detroit.
One of the best attractions in the area is the Bridge to Bay Trail, which stretches more than fifty miles close to Lake Huron and the St. Clair River. It runs the length of the St. Clair River between Port Huron and Algonac, and up the coast of Lake Huron to North Lakeport. Ask bed and breakfast North Lakeport Michigan innkeepers where to best access the trail, then decide how to travel it - on foot or by bike.
Leave the car at your North Lakeport Michigan bed and breakfast and bike down the Bridge to Bay Trail to various museums, the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse and parks in the area. The Thomas Edison Depot Museum in Port Huron makes a good stop. Famed inventor Thomas Edison spent his formative years in Port Huron, and worked between 1859 and 1863 as a news butcher on trains that connected Detroit and Port Huron.
The Huron Lightship Museum is another unique stop. Lightships were essentially floating lighthouses, anchored in areas where lighthouses were needed but difficult to construct. Step on board the Huron Lightship, the only lightship to be designated a National Historic Landmark on the Great Lakes.
In Port Huron, watch freighters go by while you sip coffee at the Great Lakes Maritime Center, also known as Vantage Point. Check out Studio 1219 for affordable art in all media. Or, during summer, take a St. Clair River excursion aboard the Huron Lady II. Have a good lunch at one of the many eateries in Port Huron before heading back up the trail.
During a day exploring Michigan lighthouses along the coast of Lake Huron, be sure to check on the renovations of Fort Gratiot Lighthouse, Michigan's oldest working lighthouse, built in 1814.
There is much to do in this area, but sometimes it is also nice just to curl up in a North Lakeport Michigan bed and breakfast with a good book or a good friend.
