Southwest Michigan has rural charm. Think small farming communities, with dozens of farm stands and u-pick farms. Think of sipping Michigan wines after touring the wineries, and cooling off with Michigan beers at small, local brewpubs. Think of tart cherry pie, buckets of freshly picked blueberries, and sweet corn on the cob dripping with butter. This is Southwest Michigan. It makes the mouth water.
Start each day with a sumptuous breakfast at a Southwest Michigan bed and breakfast, for energy will be needed to attend various festivals throughout the year. Don't miss the Blossomtime Festival in the spring (think BIG parade), wine festivals both spring and fall, the Coloma Glad-Peach Festival in August, and the St. Joseph Venetian Festival in July - the largest community celebration in this part of the state. There are always fun events somewhere in Southwest Michigan, close to local bed and breakfast Southwest Michigan.
Southwest Michigan has a rich history. Antiquing uncovers treasures in the small antique shops that dot country roads. Museums explain local history and open doors to the rest of the world. The Andrews Museum of Natural History in Berrien Springs has the most complete skeleton of a wooly mammoth found in Michigan. Fort St. Joseph Museum in Niles has a varied collection, from pictographs drawn by Chief Sitting Bull to Victorian decorative arts. Mary's City of David Museum and Tours, near Benton Harbor, provides the most complete record of an American Christian communal society to date, while the Michigan Flywheelers Museum in Bangor preserves antique gas and steam machinery, and hosts an enormous antique tractor and engine show each fall.
Of course, outdoor recreation is as popular in Southwest Michigan as it is in the rest of the state. Two ski areas offer downhill skiing, tubing, snow boarding and cross-country skiing. Get out on rivers and both small and Great Lakes by paddling, canoeing, sailing, or taking a scenic cruise. Anglers have plenty of options in SW Michigan, as do golfers, and miles of sandy beaches entice swimmers and sandcastle builders.
Stay in bed and breakfasts Southwest Michigan while visiting students at Kalamazoo, exploring the Gerald R. Ford Museum or the many microbreweries in Grand Rapids, or attending the Blessing of the Boats in Muskegon. Michigan bed and breakfasts make travel a pleasure, no matter where you go or what you do.
