The Hiawatha National Forest stretches down to St. Ignace, a reminder that much of Michigan's Upper Peninsula is untamed wilderness. This means there is fantastic outdoor recreation at the back door of every St. Ignace Michigan bed and breakfast.

The North Country National Scenic Trail is destined to be the longest off-road hiking trail in the United States. It crosses the Straits of Mackinac and resumes its westward journey in the Hiawatha National Forest, passing by Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and the impressive Tahquamenon Falls State Park. Walk or cross country ski a section of it, just so you can say you did.

There is fantastic cross country skiing near St. Ignace, as in the rest of Michigan. Yet the Silver Mountain Ski Area and Tubing Hill also has three runs for downhill skiing and snowboarding. It has an additional area for the super fun sport of snow tubing, which everyone should try at least once.
